Understand your Medicare
Enrollment Eligibility
You are eligble for Medicare benefits if you are a US Citizen OR A legal resident that has lived in the US for 5 consecutive years, including the 5 years immediately before applying to medicare.
Additionally, you must also apply to one or more of the following

- You are age 65 or older
- You are under 65 with qualifying disability
- You are any age with a diagnosis of end-stage renal disease or ALS
Enrollment Period
There are many types of enrollment periods. It is important to understand how each enrollment process applies to you.

- The Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) if you are turning age 65
- The Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) on Oct.15 - Dec.7 if you want to make any plan changes
- A Special Enrollment Period (SEP) that applies to certain life events
Late Enrollment Penalties
You will incur late enrollments penalties for Medicare Part B and or Medicare Part D if you do not take proper action according to Medicare rules.
- Medicare Part B will accumulate a 10% penalty for each 12-month period you were eligible for Medicare Part B but did not enroll
- Medicare Part D will accumulate a 1% penalty per month based on the National Premium for every month you were eligible for Medicare Part D but did not enroll
- Any penalties incurred are permanent as long as you continue to have Medicare Part B or Medicare Part D
